Indian Tourism Industry: An overview
Indian Tourism industry is rapidly developing and the increasing number of domestic and foreign tourists is further giving a push to this sector. Tourism industry is contributing nearly 6.8% of the GDP and it is providing employment to nearly 41 million people. India received nearly 4.9 million foreign tourists in 2007 and the total earnings from them have been a whooping US$12 billion.

Future Aspects of Indian Tourism Industry
The great diversity of this country attracts tourists from all over the world. Rich culture, art, tradition, history and exotic locations are the highlights of Indian tourism. It is estimated that by 2013, India is going to be the third fastest growing tourist markets. It is also believed that the demand of Indian tourism will grow at an average rate of nearly 9 %.

Steps taken by the Government to Promote Tourism
Meanwhile the government has also taken some important steps to develop this industry. Some of these steps are:
  • Launching Incredible India Campaign to promote tourism in Indian and International markets.
  • Availability of spare rooms with various houses, under gold and silver category.
  • It has tied up with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to promote rural tourism.
International Hotels Coming in India
The growth of tourism industry has also offered excellent opportunities for investors. Currently there is the demand of around 240,000 hotel rooms whereas only 90,000 rooms are available. So there is a heavy shortage of rooms. The global hotel chains such as Hilton, Accor, Marriott International, Berggruen Hotels, Cabana Hotels, Premier Travel Inn (PTI), Intercontinental Hotels Group, Hampshire etc have decided to make huge investments in India. The fact that 100 % FDI is allowed in this sector, is also attracting a lot of investors.

Problems of the Tourism Industry
The one black spot in the face of Indian tourism is the fact that many of the foreigners are assaulted in various places. Within one year, several incidents of foreigners being molested, raped and murdered in India. The government needs to provide security to them in order to further boost this prosperous industry.
