8th Las Vegas Conference On Adolescents And Young Adults aims to bring together Therapists, Nurses, Psychologists, Social Workers, School Counselors, Marriage and Family, Courts and Correction Staff, Mental Health and Alcohol & Drug Counselors to discuss and address the cutting edge issues, research advances and clinical applications for adolescents and young adults with its unique demands on counselors for state of the art skills and strategies. The objectives of the conference are: to identify assessment and treatment dilemmas in adolescent substance use and co-occurring disorders and concepts to bridge mental health and addiction systems, to identify advances in the assessment of at-risk factors and the “tie-in” between diagnosis and treatment planning, to identify clinical advances and research on the treatment of adolescents/young adults with trauma, dissociation and attachment conflicts, to discuss how the trajectory of brain development from childhood through maturity allows for the understanding of the relationship between social brain (prefrontal cortical areas) and the right cortical hemisphere and how these areas prepare the adolescent and young adult for responsible living, identify how and why such life-affirming needs of joy, purpose and serenity get abandoned in our lives and replaced with self-defeating behaviors, and to discuss anger and aggression and their treatment from a perspective that includes anger as a strategy employed as need for control caused by fear of loss of control.
